San Antonio -- Feb. 13, 2008
Meeting to be organized in collaboration with The John
Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth
What:
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) and the Boys & Girls
Clubs of America (BGCA) will host a “Meet Your Mentor
Day” for Hispanic middle school Club members. The
program will pair them with outstanding professionals
who will serve as their mentors for a seven-week session
geared to inspire these youth to pursue a higher
education.
When:
Wednesday, February 13, 2007, 6 – 7 p.m.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio, Calderon Branch
Where: 600 SW 19th Street, San Antonio, TX 78207
Why:
The HSF/BGCA Alliance goal is to increase the number of
Latino youth seeking a higher education. Latinos are the
fastest-growing minority in the U.S., at just over 44
million. Access to higher education for Latino youth is
essential to the nation’s future. The number of Latino
youth served by BGCA is currently more than 21 percent
(about 1 million) of the 4.8 million total youth served.
About the Alliance:
HSF is the nation’s leading organization supporting
Hispanic higher education, having provided 78,000
scholarships totaling $195 million in its 31-year
history.
BGCA, known as “The Positive Place for Kids,”
comprises a national network of some 4,000
neighborhood-based facilities annually serving more than
4.8 million young people. Its mission is to enable all
young people, especially those who need us most, to
reach their full potential as productive, caring,
responsible citizens.
The Center for Talented Youth provides enrichment
opportunities for high-achieving Latino youth
participating in the HSF/BGCA Alliance. Support for the
Hispanic Scholarship Fund is provided by The Goldman
Sachs Foundation in the form of a $1,000,000 grant over
three years.
