Boys
& Girls Clubs of San Antonio Opens Sixth Area Branch for
Summer Programs
San Antonio -- June 1, 2006 The Boys & Girls Clubs
of San Antonio (BGCSA) will open a sixth San Antonio
branch for the summer on Monday, June 5, at Candlewood
Elementary School, 3635 Candleglenn, located in the
northeast area of the city. Hours of operation are
Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Approximately 120 youth are expected to take part in the
Candlewood program, which will run through August 11.
"Councilwoman Sheila McNeil, District 2, approached
us about expanding our programs in her district as an
effort to provide additional worthwhile activities for
the area's youth," said Jim Watson, executive director
of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio. "Candlewood
Elementary generously offered us the use of their
facilities during the summer break."
The Candlewood branch will offer a full range of
programs for Club members, including sports and
recreational activities, arts and crafts, computer
training and field trips. For more information, area
residents can call the Boys & Girls Clubs administrative
offices at (210) 436-0686.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio offers
after-school and summer programs at five other branches:
the Calderon branch at 600 W. 19th Street; the Teen
Center at 2626 Perez; the Eastside branch at 3503 Martin
Luther King Drive; the Redeeming Grace branch at 6035 FM
78; and the Crestholme branch at 1602 Goliad Road.
Founded in 1939, the Boys & Girls Clubs of San
Antonio serve more than 6,000 members annually at five
branch locations. The Clubs provide after school and
summer program services that develop talents, values and
skills in youth ages six-to-18 years old, paying
particular attention to those most disadvantaged. As a
result of the Clubs programs, young people are inspired
and enabled to realize their full potential as
productive, responsible and caring citizens. For more
