Be Cool-Be Healthy Promotes Family Health
On May 19th, the Calderon Branch hosted the "Be Cool-Be
Healthy Festival" community event. Sponsored by the Boys
& Girls Clubs Hispanic Outreach Initiative, the UTHSC's
Sex Education Program and Time Warner Cable, the event
promoted family health through a series of fun,
interactive workshops and educational booths. Workshops
conducted by UTHSC professionals addressed topics such
as "Dealing with Peer Pressure," "Making Good Choices,"
"Recognizing Risky Behavior" and "How Media Affects
Society."
The event also offered a wide range of entertainment
and fun activities, including music, free refreshments,
games, face painting and an appearance by Cartoon
Network’s Johnny Bravo. "Be Cool-Be Healthy" provided
San Antonio youth and their families the opportunity to
learn about making healthy lifestyle choices in a
relaxed and fun atmosphere.
Cowboy Up!
Calderon branch members had a great time attending the
San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo in February. They got
to tour the Stock Show Grounds, go to the petting zoo
and play on the array of moonwalks in the Family Fun
area. They attended the rodeo and Kevin Fowler's
concert, which had them dancing in the aisles! For some
Club members, it was the first time they had ever been
to the Rodeo and was an unforgettable experience.
Spurs Drug-Free League Ignites Passion for
Basketball
This year's Spurs Drug-Free League was a big success,
with many Club members being exposed to the game of
basketball for the very first time. Once they got the
fundamentals down, these novices emerged into
outstanding basketball players. For a number of kids,
the league provided the opportunity to discover a sport
they love, instilled in them a higher level of
self-esteem and gave them new goals to work toward.
