New Learning Center Unveiled
In May, the Eastside Branch unveiled its new Academic
Learning Center. The vibrantly painted center is
designed to support academic progress in the areas of
mathematics, science, reading, writing and public
speaking. It includes four additional new computers and
new software such as PowerPoint, new science equipment,
a stage for dramatic performances and public speaking,
and a wide variety of books. A wall mural of Club
members painted by New Orleans artist Wardell Picquet is
the focal point of the facility. The Academic Center was
made possible by grants from the Zachry Foundation, the
S.A.Yes Foundation and the Charity Ball Association.
Variety of Programs Celebrate Black History Month
To commemorate National Black History Month, the
Eastside branch hosted and participated in a full slate
of programs. Club activities included writing essays
about black history, participating in black history
quizzes and showing movies about the civil rights
movement. A Black History Month program was held at
Carroll Elementary School, with a number of Club members
performing in the production. Other events hosted at the
Eastside branch included a fashion show and food tasting
sponsored by the Organization for Black Unity, and a
community information event sponsored by ATIVA --
Antioch Baptist Church, complete with a dance contest, a
rap-off and prize giveaways from radio station 106.7,
which broadcast live from the event.
Keystone Members Make Valentine's Day Brighter for
Area Seniors
For their February service project, Eastside Keystone
Club members made and delivered Valentine goody bags to
a neighborhood senior citizen home. Club members enjoyed
spending time talking with the seniors. The maturity and
genuine concern they displayed for the home's residents
greatly impressed the home's staff, who invited them to
come back again soon.
