Lights On Afterschool Rally a Success
The Candlewood branch kicked off their first Lights On Afterschool rally on Thursday, Oct. 18. More than 160 Club kids, parents and volunteers turned out for an evening of fun, music and pizza. The event was hosted by the Club's Keystone and Torch Club members and its focus was to thank the sponsors and volunteers who help with the after school programs. The national Lights On Afterschool program was founded by the Afterschool Alliance organization whose mission is to ensure that all children and youth have access to quality after school programs. More than 7,500 Lights On Afterschool events were held nationwide on Oct. 18th, and involved more than 1 million people.

Candlewood Kids Clean Up as Part of Grafitti Wipeout
On Saturday, Sept. 29th, eight Candlewood branch members took on the task of wiping out some very unsightly graffiti in Southside San Antonio. Armed with paintbrushes and rollers, the Club kids started out early that morning and finished around noon. They were then treated to a great lunch as a reward for a job well done.

Football and (State) Fair Fun
Twenty-one Club teens enjoyed a great weekend in Dallas when they attended the Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic showdown between the Grambling State University Tigers and the Prairie View A&M University Panthers on Sept. 29. This Cotton Bowl rivalry dates back to the mid-'80s and this year's outcome was Grambling State 17 - Prairie View 14. The kids couldn't decide if the game or the fair rides were more exciting. The highlight of the trip was attending the Boys to Men concert at the fair.

Kuts for Kids Sends Club Members to School in Style
To help Club members get ready to go back to school, Citibank donated $500 to the Candlewood branch to cover the cost of haircuts. A total of 50 Club members got their hair cut on Aug. 24 at The Hook Up Barber Shoppe. They had a choice of getting a bald fade or a regular hair cut.
